Twitter, tweets and all that jazz is all we are ever hearing about at the moment. Everybody has a Twitter account and it is astonishing the various types of companies who actually have a Twitter page. When you are creating your SMM strategy you will no doubt come across the decision as to whether you need a Twitter account or if you are just creating one for the sake of it. The thing about Twitter is that you will see a lot of dormant Twitter accounts with a handful of followers and no tweets or posts for months. Twitter profiles such as this have obviously been set up in a half hearted way or as a gesture towards social media marketing. What these companies fail to realise is that a poor Twitter profile is worse than no profile at all and won’t benefit your search engine optimisation campaign.

If you as an individual or as a company decide that a Twitter account is needed to increase brand awareness of just to get more involved with your audience, then it needs some careful planning and thought. This is your business we are talking about, not a social experiment, and any action you take which bears your company name reflects on your business and your brand image. The nature of your business is one of the first things to look at and we at www.seoconsult.co.uk can help you to decide on the best course of action. Consider whether it is the type of business which people would want to talk about and be followed. If it is, then you can benefit from social media optimisation, however if you are more about facts and figures and the nature of your business is not something which people would follow or discuss heavily, then creating a Twitter account could be a waste of energy.

Once you have established that Twitter is for you then you need to do some background work. It can be all too tempting to just launch in and see what happens, but this is in no way a form of marketing strategy and could do your online reputation management hopes more harm than good. Prior to creating your profile do as much research as you can on competitor companies or relevant companies within your industry that are on Twitter. Decide on who you are going to follow and always ensure you have a handful of people or companies who will follow you. Ensure that those you are following are a positive link to your business and not a direct competitor or completely unrelated.

When you embark on your Twitter journey you should always have clear objectives in place. Focus on two or three things which you want to discuss and tweet about these. If you are trying to build up a brand image then ensure you are tweeting regularly on the same topic. You should also monitor your re-tweets and post back on any comments which are made on your business. This also gives you greater control and enables you to channel the conversation back to your way of thinking. Twitter can no doubt be a very effective social marketing and SEO tool, but it isn’t for everyone.
